Fights tooth decay

Understanding tooth decay: causes and solutions for optimal dental health.

Caries result from the destructive action of acids generated by oral bacteria interacting with food. They are often asymptomatic, but can be treated and restored using modern aesthetic materials.

At Clínica Dental Dr. Claudia Vargas Dal Santo we can give you an accurate diagnosis of where your teeth are and whether or not you have caries, make an appointment for a check-up of the state of your teeth.

What is a cavity?

It is a multifactorial infectious disease that can affect all teeth regardless of age. It causes demineralisation of the enamel and dentine, leading to permanent damage that can manifest as holes or black spots on the surface of the teeth.

It starts as a small lesion with the appearance of a white spot, which usually goes unnoticed. However, it can rapidly evolve into a cavitated lesion, extending into deeper layers of the tooth and causing pain.

It is essential to understand that teeth do not regenerate or regrow. Therefore, the damage is irreversible, and the dentist can only fill the missing portion with a restorative material.

What are the most common symptoms of tooth decay?

Depending on the severity of the lesion, caries can present different symptoms. In its initial stage, there are no symptoms at all, and it can be seen as a small, almost imperceptible spot.

In its more advanced stages, symptoms may include:

  • Pain produced by a stimulus such as chewing or eating sweet foods.
  • Pain of spontaneous onset with no apparent cause.
  • Hypersensitivity or pain to cold and heat.
  • Dark spots or holes on the tooth surfaces.

Sometimes lesions appear in the small spaces between the teeth and can only be discovered by radiographic examination.

Why does tooth decay occur?

Some of the bacteria present in the mouth consume and metabolise the sugar residues left after eating. This produces a reaction that demineralises and erodes the tissues of the tooth to create visible holes.

There are certain factors that favour the formation of cavities because they increase the amount of bacteria or decrease the teeth's defences against the disease.

Some of these factors are:

  • Dental calculus
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Lack of fluoride
  • Low salivary flow
  • Inefficient toothbrushing

When to go to the dentist if you have tooth decay?

As tooth decay produces no symptoms in its early stages, it is essential to visit the dentist regularly for a cleaning and check-up.

It is recommended to schedule an appointment at least once a year. However, in cases of patients with a significant risk factor such as diabetes or low saliva production, follow-up appointments at least twice a year are recommended.

If you notice a black spot or feel a hole in a tooth, consider seeing a dentist as soon as possible.

Complications with Caries

If left untreated, tooth decay will progress continuously to create further destruction.

This may result in the following consequences:

  • Dental infections.
  • Severe pain that interferes with daily life.
  • Tooth loss and, as a consequence, alterations in the position of the other teeth.

It is essential to understand that caries lesions generally grow in a pyramidal pattern with the base located towards the centre of the tooth.

This means that cavities are usually larger than they appear to the naked eye.

Randal Prevention

Good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are enough to prevent tooth decay.

Some prevention recommendations include:

  • Dental care: Brush teeth at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, and supplement with mouthwash and floss at least once a day.
  • Balanced diet: Provides the nutrients necessary for teeth to stay healthy.
  • Reduce sugar consumption: Sugar is the biggest risk factor for tooth decay.

With the right knowledge, it is easy to prevent tooth decay and maintain good oral health.

Even if you don't notice it, tooth decay could be present and damaging your teeth.

If you have a cavity in a tooth do not let time pass and remember that not treating it in a timely manner can lead to the loss of the tooth, make an appointment to make sure you are healthy and free of cavities.

Early stage caries

During this initial stage there is usually no pain, only in some cases there is sensitivity to cold and to the ingestion of sweet foods.

Caries treatment

If you're looking for a way to treat tooth decay that doesn't involve removing the entire tooth, look no further than cavity treatment.

Caries in children

Cavities in young children occur when bacteria in the mouth begin to eat away at the baby teeth, also called primary teeth.
